Microbicides

"Microbicides would be the most important innovation in reproductive health since the Pill."
~Global Campaign for Microbicides

What are Microbicides?

Microbicidesrefers to a range of different products that are able to prevent the sexual transmission of HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) when applied topically. A microbicide could be produced in many forms, including gels, creams, suppositories, films, or as a sponge or ring that releases the active ingredient over time. Microbicides are not currently available in the market place, but a great deal of effort is being made to aid in their development and bring microbicides to market.

Why are Microbicides important?

Despite the increased knowledge of successful HIV prevention strategies (condoms, reduction in number of sexual partners), HIV continues to spread at an alarming rate. The rate of transmission is particularly alarming among women in developing countries. Unlike condoms, microbicides are an HIV prevention option that women can control on their own; they do not require the cooperation, consent or even knowledge of the partner.
