Completed Projects & Campaigns
In 2010, the Bike to CAP AIDS Campaign in Canada raised $39,000 through a series of bike-a-thons in Toronto, Ottawa, Vancouver and Victoria.
Funds were used to purchase 73 bikes for outreach workers and community volunteers through our partners in Ethiopia and Tanzania.
All remaining funds were used to support CAP AIDS' current Safe Livelihoods Project in Ethiopia and Uganda through which we are supporting caregivers and HIV-affected youth in Vocational and Entrepreneurship Training as well as care and support activities for people living with HIV and AIDS orphans.
With successful community bike-a-thons in Toronto, Ottawa and Victoria, $38,500 was raised for the Bike to CAP AIDS campaign in Canada.
$25,000 of the total funds raised were used to support CAP AIDS Uganda in procuring and distributing 110 bicycles and provding training 30 HIV&AIDS Peer Educators and 60 Local Council members.
Remaining funds were used in support of our ongoing work focussed on building the capacity of our local partners in Uganda and provding financial resources for their work providing care and support to HIV-affected households, conducting educational and awareness raising activities in their communities and providing livelihood training for caregivers and HIV-affected youth.
During the course of 2009, 104 bicycles were also distributed to community workers and local leaders that had been trained through our Northern Uganda Rehabilitation Program (see below) so that they could reach out further in their communities and support ongoing efforts by volunteers and community-based organizations.
Implemented by CAP AIDS Uganda and funded by the European Union (EU), the project supported 200 widows, war returnees and AIDS-affected youth with employment/self-employment skills, start-up capital for income-generating projects, and human rights education.
Through this project, we also trained 40 volunteer community outreach workers in basic concepts of project cycle management, HIV/AIDS, Human Rights, Community mobilisation & Basic Primary Health Care engaged with 64 local leaders (such as members of local community councils) to expand their understanding of Human Rights, Rule of law, and their roles & responsibilities in protecting & promoting respect of Human Rights in their communities - with special emphasis on protecting the rights of community members affected by HIV&AIDS.
In March 2006, the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA) approved a 2-year contribution of $120,000 toward the $180,000 budget of the Safe Livelihoods project.
Through this project, CAP AIDS successfully partnered with 4 African organizations - in Uganda and Ethiopia - to provide livelihood training and input to more than 400 beneficiaries. Through a combination of Vocational Skills Training, Entrepreneurship Training and providing inputs for small-enterprise development, these beneficiaries were able to develop secure livelihoods and provide financially for their families.
As part of the project, our 4 partners also received training on organizational management, financial accountability, project monitoring and evaluation and communications to support their ability to contrinue to support livelihood activities in their communities.
