About Our Local Heroes

CANADIAN HEROES Our Local Hero | Blair M.W. Bowen, Toronto

It is through the drive and determination of people like Blair  that CAP AIDS is able to reach out to Canadians across the country and mobilize the support Africans need to deal with HIV+AIDS every day.

An avid golfer, Toronto lawyer and father of two young adults, Blair is one of our leading fundraisers. He founded and hosts the annual “Golf 2 CAP AIDS in Africa” campaign in Toronto, Ontario . Every summer he brings friends together for a round of golf and in so doing, has raised more than $10 000 since 2005.

Blair is also one of our leading Bike 2 CAP AIDS fundraisers.

Our Local Hero | Danielle Howe

In 2007, Danielle, then a 16-year old high school student at Ancaster High School, coordinated 16 schools across Canada to participate in the Break The Silence campaign. For 24 hours, hundreds of students remained silent in honour of those in Africa who have forever been silenced by HIV+AIDS, and those who continue to endure the pandemic. This campaign also sought to support CAP AIDS’ work with grassroots, community-based African HIV+AIDS organizations. Thanks to Danielle’s ability to mobilize, the campaign was a phenomenal success, raising over $25 000.

Our Local Hero | Christine Pensa, Toronto

Few Canadian local heroes deserve more recognition than Christine, an artist, mother of two, long-time CAP AIDS volunteer, friend, and former Board Member. Since 2004, Christine has organized art shows and donated 10% of the proceeds to CAP AIDS. She continues to volunteer for CAP AIDS communications, fundraising and events. Please visit Christine’s website and make a purchase that will benefit CAP AIDS.

Our Local Hero | Marc Abbyard, Ottawa

CCAP AIDS supporters are also thinking outside the box to raise money for campaigns like the Bike 2 CAP AIDS. Hoping to channel his friends’ Christmas generosity, Marc Abbyard held a silent auction and Christmas party for his friends in 2008 and 2009. Together, they raised over $1200 for CAP AIDS.

Our Local Hero | Mark Gifford, Vancouver

Mark is a long-time CAP AIDS friend, volunteer and fundraiser, working with a group of dedicated Vancouver-based volunteers in CAP AIDS’ various west coast initiatives.

Our Local Hero | Nicole Fulton, Vancouver

In 2006, Nicole’s team, Friends of Hawa, topped our Bike 2 CAP AIDS fundraising teams with more than $5 000. Nicole’s team were inspired by Hawa, a then 4 year old girl living with HIV in Lagos, Nigeria, and a friend of Nicole's. "Friends of Hawa" is a team of regular Vancouverites committed to improving the lives of children living with HIV in Sub-Saharan Africa.

An estimated 1.2 million children are orphaned by AIDS in South Africa . Nicky is committed to improving their situation.
